National Cancer Awareness Day is observed in India on November 7 each year to increase public understanding of cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment options. Initiated in 2014 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the day serves as a reminder of the importance of awareness, given the growing number of cancer cases in India and worldwide. Early detection is particularly vital, as cancer diagnosed at an advanced stage is more difficult to treat and has lower survival rates.

The day commemorates the birth anniversary of Madam Curie, the renowned scientist whose work in radioactivity has been instrumental in cancer treatment, specifically through radiation therapy. Activities on National Cancer Awareness Day include public health campaigns, screenings, workshops, and educational events to encourage people to undergo regular screenings and adopt healthier lifestyles.

According to WHO, many cancers are preventable through lifestyle modifications, such as quitting tobacco, maintaining a healthy diet, and regular exercise. National Cancer Awareness Day highlights these preventive measures and the importance of early intervention to save lives, aiming to reduce the cancer burden and promote overall public health.
