International Day for the Elderly is celebrated on October 1 every year. The day is celebrated to spread awareness about the importance of senior citizens in our society and to appreciate their contributions.

Senior citizens carry a lot of responsibility on their shoulders as leaders of the society. They also carry the traditions, culture of the society and pass on the knowledge to the younger generation.

If we take the time to get to know an older person, even one right in our own family, we may see them in a new light and learn something about ourselves in the process. There’s a lot that can be done to make life easier for older people.

While a longer life of our elderly means more chances for them to pursue new activities, may be a new career, and their increased contribution in our society, it also means they are at risk of disease and disability and losing quality of life over a period of time.

** The world is getting much older.
** Longevity is becoming common
** Happiness increases with old age
** Older people deserve our respect and attention
** Learing from their experience

The older people are wise, always listen to them and cherish them—happy International Day for Older Persons.
