The government of India organises a week-long campaign to raise awareness about blindness from April 1 to April 7 each year. The Indian government associated itself with the global initiative, “Vision 2020: The Right To Sight”, launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness week and other NGOs to eliminate avoidable blindness by 2020

The aim of the campaign is to pay attention to various risk factors that lead to eye injuries which can cause visual impairment. People need education of all possible eye problems, complications including the periodic eye checkup from an ophthalmologist, nearest eye clinics, which facilitates checkup facility. The major causes of the blindness are trachoma, cataract, vitamin A deficiency, malnutrition including the shortage of optometrists and donated eye. Eye donation is the most effective way to provide real support to the blind people as well as bring a permanent light in their dark life.
