World Stroke Day raises awareness of the warning signs and appropriate response to stroke and reducing delay in seeking emergency medical care.

An ischemic stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Brain cells begin to die in minutes.

Symptoms:
* Trouble speaking and understanding what others are saying.
* Numbness of the face, arm or leg
* Problems seeing in one or both eyes
* Headache
* Trouble walking

Prevention:
* Controlling high blood pressure
* Lowering the amount of cholesterol and saturated fat in your diet.
* Quitting tobacco use
* Managing diabetes
* Maintaining a healthy weight
